Jeannette Waax, Cluster Manager Fiber To the Home, was recently invited to Malta to speak about the Fiber Optic Valley methods for innovation and business development within fiber optics.

The seminar was held at the STC Training Centre, a campus for management students and attracted a lot of attention, for example Maltese media.

The Maltese government recently decided on a national vision to be obtained by 2015. The island should become a Mediterranean centre for information technology and a big roll-out of fiber to the home will be carried out.’

Through Jeannette’s visit to Malta a number of companies in Fiber Optic Valley’s business network has been noticed by the government’s advisory group. The Swedish companies will now have the opportunity to bid for contracts on the new fiber infrastructure in Malta.

Read the article “Cooperation beats competition” in the Times of Malta about Jeannette’s visit:

Research and Development Manager Magnus Engholm, Fiber Optic Valley and researcher Lars Norin, Acreo are invited as speakers at Photonics West. The event is the world’s largest and leading trade fair in photonics, laser and biomedical optics and takes place between
23 and 28 January at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, California.

Magnus and Lars have done research in the field of fiber lasers, which are used for material processing for example cutting, welding and marking of steel, sheet metal or plastic. Their research has resulted in fiber optics that are significantly more durable, which opens up for new industrial fiber optic applications not possible so far. One example is the manufacture of solar cells. The results have attracted great interest around the world such as the invitation to speak at Photonics West, a request from the Scientific Committee of the exhibition.

In recent years, Magnus and Lars have produced several articles on the subject. During last year’s fair, which attracted almost 18 000 visitors, their articles where quoted 15 times.

Fiber Optic Valley being an Associate Partner at the FTTH Council Europe event in Lisbon, 24-25 of February 2010, is a strategically important step towards further international recognition. FTTH Council has committees on all continents and is an independent association working for a sustainable future enabled by Fiber to the Home.

– The purpose of the Council resembles the aim of Fiber Optic Valley. When the Council offered us to a partnership for the Lisbon event, it was natural to agree. We look at it as a way to further enhance Fiber Optic Valley’s position as a European center for fiber optics, says Jeannette Waax, Cluster Manager FTTH at Fiber Optic Valley.

High-speed broadband enables many jobs to be done remotely. Håkan Karlsson, a well-known editor and post production manager in the Swedish film industry was able to completely change his way of life by becoming a telecommuter.

High-speed broadband enables many jobs to be done remotely. Håkan Karlsson, a well-known editor and post production manager in the Swedish film industry was able to completely change his way of life by becoming a telecommuter.

A 20-year film-industry veteran, Karlsson has worked on movies starring such actors as Swedish veteran Peter Stormare. (You may remember Stormare as the doctor in the American movie Minority Report who transplants new eyes into Tom Cruise’s character, or as John Abruzzi from the American TV show Prison Break.)

Karlsson long dreamed of doing his job remotely. Two years ago, he finally decided to make it happen. Karlsson bought an old schoolhouse in Kilafors, a small town in the Fiber Optic Valley-region, and transformed it into a modern film-editing studio, where he is developing a brand-new technology for remote collaborative film editing in real time.

Karlsson’s work requires broadband speeds of at least 50 megabits per second, making access to high-speed broadband imperative.

The idea for the remote studio originated in the early 1990s during his editing of a film that was shot on the Swedish island of Gotland. As the rest of the team slept in tents on the beach after drinking beer around a campfire, Karlsson was holed up in a dingy film studio in Stockholm.

In all photos of film teams, no matter how tanned and happy most of the team looks, there will always be a pale dude in the back, namely the editor who never gets out.” he says.

Now Karlsson watches the weather change over the lake from his floor-to-ceiling windows. In the summer, when the light remains well into the night and his kids are off from school, Karlsson spends his mornings doing carpentry or taking the children swimming. During the afternoons and evenings, he focuses on his work. With his summer tan coming along nicely this year, his only worry is that his colleagues may not recognize him.

I have many colleagues and friends who say they’d love to live in the countryside if they didn’t have to abandon their career,” Karlsson says. “Here you can get a high quality of life at a lower cost and without the noise and distractions of big-city life; the workday is so much more efficient.”

To me, taking the rowboat out for some perch fishing at the end of the day is much more appealing than going for after-work beers in some big-city pub.”
